You Are Not Alone on Your C-Section Recovery Journey
A Cesarean birth is a major surgery and healing goes far beyond the surface. I am here to support you with experienced, compassionate support.
What I Wish Every Mom Knew About C-Section Recovery
A C-section is a beautiful birth story. It is also major abdominal surgery. Unfortunately, it rarely receives the guidance it deserves. Most moms leave the hospital with a newborn, a bottle of pain meds, and very little instruction on what to do (and more importantly, what to avoid doing) to optimize their healing.
Here is the truth: Your recovery requires more than just time; it requires targeted, compassionate care.
The 7 Layers of Healing
When you look at your scar, you are only seeing the surface. A Cesarean birth actually transitions through 7 distinct layers of tissue, with multiple incisions made in different directions:
-
Skin
-
Fat
-
Fascia (the fibrous connective tissue covering your muscles)
-
Abdominal muscle
-
Peritoneum (the lining of your abdominal cavity)
-
Uterus (which has two layers of its own)
-
Amniotic sac
Because of how deep this surgery goes, you aren’t just healing a visible surface line. True recovery means healing all of the layers underneath, from your belly button all the way down to your pubic bone.
The Reality of Recovery: What It Actually Feels Like
It is completely normal to feel blindsided by the intensity of postpartum healing. You don't realize how much you rely on your core muscles for basic, everyday movements until you suddenly lose connection to them post-surgery.
To help you navigate your body, it helps to look at recovery in two distinct stages:
1
Phase 1: The First 6 Weeks
The first few days and weeks are the most intense window of healing. During this time, your body is managing acute surgical trauma alongside shifting postpartum hormones and a newborn. You might experience:
-
Deep core weakness: Finding it difficult to roll over, sit up, or get out of bed.
-
Numbness & nerve changes: A total loss of sensation across the incision and lower abdomen (often extending all the way to your belly button).
-
Surgical discomfort: Severe pain in the initial days that should decrease significantly by week 2, tapering further toward week 12.
-
Unexpected symptoms: Initial gas pain, significant abdominal swelling, and itchy skin around the incision.
-
Physical demands: Vaginal bleeding for up to 6 to 8 weeks, profound fatigue, and emotional fluctuations or feelings of grief.
2
Phase 2: Beyond 6 Weeks
The biggest misconception in postpartum care is that you are 'fully healed' at your 6-week medical check-up.
While your scar tissue is relatively strong by then, it does not fully mature until 12 weeks, and your core is nowhere near pre-pregnancy strength. Furthermore, how your scar looks on the surface is no indication of how it has healed internally. You can have intense internal tension and adhesions causing issues even if your surface scar looks completely flat and faded.
Months, or even years down the road, unaddressed internal adhesions can cause:
-
A tight, adhered scar that puckers inward (often forming the 'C-section shelf').
-
Tenderness or sharp pain if your scar gets accidentally hit (like by a kicking baby or leaning over a crib).
-
Numbness, itching, or hypersensitivity that never quite went away.
-
A tight, pulling sensation along the scar line during certain movements.
-
Referred pain: A hunched-forward posture, new low back pain, or pelvic floor symptoms (like pelvic pressure or urinary leaking).
-
Painful sex, or a deep fear and hesitation around intimacy.
-
An emotional disconnect or intense aversion to looking at or touching your own abdomen.
My Philosophy: A Layered Approach to Healing
Just because these long-term symptoms are common, it does not mean they are normal. You do not have to just 'live with them' - no matter what a doctor might have told you. Your body may take a year or more to fully recover physically, emotionally, and hormonally, so please have grace, be patient with yourself, and know that there are proven strategies to help you heal optimally.
Putting You at the Centre of Healing
I Build Safety First
Whether you are fully comfortable touching your scar or have barely been able to look at it since giving birth, I meet you exactly where you are. I begin with light, nervous-system-calming touch and progress only as your body integrates a feeling of safety and relaxation.
I Listen to the Raw Parts
I love listening to birth stories, and I want the long version. Hearing the honest, emotional reality of your delivery helps me understand the physical picture, while helping you feel truly seen and supported - perhaps for the very first time.
